The ferry terminal at Vesuvius has sailings to Crofton on Vancouver Island. Duncan is about a 20 minute drive to the south, and Nanaimo is about 45 minutes to the north. Long Harbour provides the ferry connection to the other Gulf Islands as well as to Tsawwassen on the mainland, near Vancouver BC. Sailings from Fulford Harbour go to Swartz Bay. Connections can be made to the other Gulf Islands, or to Tsawwassen on the mainland, or continue south to Sidney, the Pat Bay (Victoria International) Airport, or continue on to Victoria. Cusheon Lake St. Mary Lake Southy Point is at the northern tip of Salt Spring Island! Mt. Erskine is a popular hiking spot with trails to the top from two sides. It provides views down to Vesuvius, Crofton and towards Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Mt. Maxwell (officially Baynes Peak) has easy driving access to the top, with spectacular views down to Burgoyne Bay, Sansum Narrows and Vancouver Island stretching out into the distance. It also has great mountain biking and hiking trails! Mt. Tuam looks down on Fulford Harbour as well as Swartz Bay and Victoria off to the south. Bruce Peak is the highest point on Salt Spring Island. While festooned with communications towers, it has spectactular 360 degree views. The road is 4x4 only, but is a nice hike or (strenuous) mountain bike ride. Ruckle Park at Beaver Point has campsites and nice hiking trails - especially out to Yeo Point. Ganges is at the centre of Salt Spring Island. There are several private marinas and a government dock. Many businesses, art galleries and restaurants are clustered here. Vancouver Island can be reached by ferry from Vesuvius or from Fulford Harbour. Vancouver is the largest city in BC. It can be reached by ferry from Long Harbour, or via Fulford Harbour / Swartz Bay. Seattle is the largest city in the state of Washington.
